The Feminist and the Fashionista, two titles that aren’t often used in the same sentence. In fact, they seem to be in conflict. How does posting daily pictures on Instagram, writing a fashion blog and spending time and effort on outward appearances have anything to do with being a feminist? I consider a feminist as someone who sees inequality and injustice and is willing to make changes. In a greater sense, it is someone who is willing to show and provide a steady stream of support and give someone else a hand up. Where does the fashion industry fit into all of this? Does telling women their appearance matters, giving them ideas of what to wear, and advertising to them truly empower and help them? From this perspective, these worlds are at odds. However, there is a wave of power that comes with this world and it is empowering women. Since starting everyDAE, we have all been inspired by the constant cheers, help and encouragement the blogging community has shown to our start-up business. Women across the globe have reached out to show their support, we’ve had others who have already wanted to work on projects with us, we’ve had followers give us thousands of likes an cheers along the way. This constant steady wave of support from mostly women, tells me the feminist and fashionista very much co-exist. The feminist is cheering for her counterparts to continue, to succeed, and is even willing to help. The feminist is the woman who is brave, takes on changes and steadily moves forward. The feminist reaches out everyday, puts on a brave face, does what she loves and sets goals. As I look at our followers and counterparts, the number of women involved in the cause is exciting. We are the underdogs right now, more start-ups fail than succeed and the odds are against us. However, we have a great force of feminists behind us and because of them, we will comfortably claim both titles.
